Fall Faculty Job Search Series

This series of Zoom webinars seeks to provide some insights into navigating the faculty job search. Perspectives from individuals serving on faculty search committees, recent faculty hires, and aggregated data from applicants on the faculty job market over the past few years will be shared.

Past Events

In this session, Virginia Tech Postdoctoral Affairs Program Administrator Chris Smith, shares data from a set of faculty job market applicant surveys from 2018 to the present as well as an overview of the Academic Career Readiness Assessment developed at University of California, San Francisco.

Viewers leave with insights on some of the critical factors and metrics associated with landing a faculty position as well as an appreciation of the different qualifications needed to be competitive at different types of institutions. While the presented data are mostly from STEM and the biological sciences fields, general advice on applying for faculty positions will be shared.

Learn more about this work and read the 2018-2019 job market survey paper.

Postdocs and Ph.D. students from Purdue University were also in attendance as part of a program exchange planned for 2022-23.

Jessica Pfleger began as an assistant professor at Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in July 2021. She is a faculty member in the department of biological sciences, receiving her Ph.D. in cellular biology and molecular medicine from Rutgers University and completed her postdoctoral training at Temple University School of Medicine.

Pfleger will share her personal experience on the faculty job market and navigating virtual presentations and interviews.
