Marissa Buccilli

Research Scientist

Responsibilities

Marissa Buccilli is a Research Scientist in Virginia Tech's Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance. She contributes to the Innovative Research and Ethical Impact project, a National Science Foundation (NSF) -funded institutional transformation initiative to strengthen departmental research climates by cultivating ethics expertise through faculty engagement, peer learning, and establishing a research integrity community of practice. Her work includes designing and facilitating research ethics workshops, collaborating with interdisciplinary faculty and research leadership, and conducting research on the development of ethics expertise and self-efficacy.

Background

Before joining the Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance, Buccilli taught technical and professional writing courses at Virginia Tech, where she developed courses emphasizing scientific communication and the responsible use of AI in writing. She also contributed to Virginia Tech's NSF COMPASS initiative, supporting research on ethical community-academic partnerships and strategies for building public trust in science. Additionally, she worked as an instructional designer with the American Society of Addiction Medicine, developing continuing education resources for clinical audiences.

Education

Buccilli earned a Ph.D. in rhetoric and writing from Virginia Tech. Her research examines how professional communities interpret and communicate ambiguous scientific evidence, build shared knowledge under conditions of uncertainty, and cultivate the norms and practices that support research integrity and evidence-informed decision-making.
