About L-MAP:

Originally developed at Washington University in St. Louis with support from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, L-MAP uses an active-learning format based on discussion of authentic case studies drawn from the experiences of graduate students and postdocs from diverse backgrounds. Case study training facilitates learning through active problem-solving and allows participants to change attitudes, behaviors, and decisions related to conflict management, communication strategies and navigating organizational hierarchies.

New engineering-based case studies have been developed by Georgia Tech in collaboration with Washington University in St. Louis to supplement the L-MAP model.

Topics to be covered across the 6-week series include:

  • Professionalism and Professional Identity
  • Leading Without Authority
  • Negotiation
  • Working in Teams
  • Inclusive Organizational Cultures

And will culminate with you writing your personal Leadership Statement.

Program Objectives:
Research-intensive institutions increasingly recognize the importance of team science and collaborations, both between research teams and with industry partners to develop new knowledge, products, and technology. Trainees in this program will learn skills to participate in and develop functional teams that respect diversity and foster inclusion. Through active learning in teams, postdocs will develop applicable leadership and management skills that will transfer to any career they pursue, post-postdoc.
