Research and Innovation Brand

General information about the Research and Innovation brand

With approval by the  Executive Vice President and Provost and Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation, effective Aug. 1, 2022, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation is now the “Office of Research and Innovation.”

  • On first reference, use the full name: “Office of Research and Innovation,” in written and verbal instances.
  • On second reference, to reinforce the office’s name, the preferable usage is either the full name or “Research and Innovation.”

DO NOT:

  • Use “ORI” as an acronym for the office when it is possible (space allows) to spell out
  • Verbally say "ORI," as the short version should be "Research and Innovation"
  • Use the symbol "&" between the words. In all instances, the word "and" should be used: "Research and Innovation."

NOTE: Other options for second reference include “the office,” if the context is clear which office is being referenced and space is limited (ex. File name), “ORI” may be used. It should not be used in formal letters, body of emails, websites, storytelling/news, presentation materials, marketing material, and verbally in conversation or formal presentations.

Examples:

  • Three Virginia Tech researchers received funding from the Office of Research and Innovation to conduct artificial intelligence research.
  • Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation Dan Sui said the funding is further evidence of the faculty member’s transdisciplinary depth and breadth of research in the ever-evolving field.
