Responsibilities

Laurel Miner serves as the assistant vice president and chief of staff for Research and Innovation. As a member of Research and Innovation’s senior leadership team, she supports strategic planning and initiatives for the office and provides cross-cutting analysis and administrative support for Senior Vice President Dan Sui. She oversees several teams for Research and Innovation, including marketing and communications, information technology, electronic research administration, and postdoctoral affairs.

Background

Miner joined Virginia Tech in 2018. From 2018 – 20, Miner provided leadership for the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, including leading the development of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative blueprint and served as the managing director for the initiative during its startup phase.

Prior to her appointment as chief of staff, she was a senior analyst in the office of the Undersecretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and director of the National Institute for Standards and Technology. There, she led strategic planning and communications, supported the institute's principal advisory committee, as well as budget development. She previously served as a science advisor to the Under Secretary for Science at the Department of Energy.

Education

Miner earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of William & Mary and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill; all in the field of physics.
