Center Director Five Year Performance Review Template Structure

The below format can be used to create a template for a center director's five year performance review.

[Demographic information relevant to the Center may be requested - for example disciplinary focus or department; appointment type or title; affiliation status with the Center]

(The following have options: strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree, no basis for opinion)

The items below focus on different aspects of [director]’s leadership

  1. Clearly articulates [center]’s vision and mission in support of university 
  2. Develops and implements strategic plans that keep pace with change
  3. Demonstrates agility research challenges, while maintaining a long-term vision
  4. Allocates resources effectively in support of [center]’s mission and broader university objectives 
  5. Exhibits integrity, trustworthiness, and honesty

The items below focus on different aspects of [director]’s decision making

  1. Exercises sound judgment without unnecessary delay
  2. Communicates decisions clearly and with transparency
  3. Makes fiscal decisions consistent with effective stewardship of funding number 
  4. Encourages and supports professional development and achievement
  5. Effectively represents the value of [center] to the rest of the university

The following items focus on different aspects of [director]’s contributions to an inclusive environment and diversity

  1. Creates a climate of civility, sensitivity, and mutual respect
  2. Treats faculty and staff as individuals recognizing their differing needs
  3.  Makes significant contributions to the growth of interdisciplinary research, and most notably in the social sciences, at Virginia Tech
  4. Has worked effectively with colleges, departments, and other units on campus to create synergies that would not exist in the absence of [center]
  5. Has instituted practices to mentor and develop junior faculty as successful scholars
  6. Has created a culture that values excellence in research and scholarship across multiple, diverse disciplines
  7.  Has effective mechanisms for seeking internal (within the university) feedback on Institute performance and strategy

The following items are open ended to allow for expanded comments related to [director]'s leadership, decision making, supervision/personnel development, communication/university relationships, and contributions to diversity not addressed above:
