Reza Barkhi

Photo of Scholar of the Week Reza BarkhiThe Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation recognizes Reza Barkhi, a professor and head of the department of accounting and information systems in the Pamplin College of Business, for his research in collaborative technologies and team problem-solving.

Barkhi is interested in Group Decision Support Systems, which are computer-based systems that help a team of decision-makers solve problems and make choices, and Organizational Integration Systems. His research interests are in designing group decision support systems, organizational integration systems, distributed decision-making systems, telecommunication networks, and economics of information systems.
He has been both an academic and a practitioner in software development for many years.

A faculty member since 1997, Barkhi served for three years as head of the management information systems department at American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, while on leave from Pamplin College of Business.

His research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Management Information Systems, Location Science, Decision Support Systems, the European Journal of Operational Research, Group Decision and Negotiation Journal, the Journal of Educational Technology Systems, Computers and OR, the International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Systems, the Journal of End-User Computing, Information Technology and Decision Making, Engineering Applications in Artificial Intelligence, the Journal of Global Information Technology Management, and the Journal of Computing and Electronic Commerce.

Reza is one of the founding members of the Center for Global Electronic Commerce at Virginia Tech. He is a member of Association for Information Systems (AIS), The Institute of Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS), and Decision Sciences Institute (DSI).

Barkhi received his bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
