Michael Madigan

The Office of the Vice President for Research recognizes Michael Madigan, associate professor of engineering science and mechanics (ESM), for research that uses both human subjects testing and computer modeling to study factors contributing to slip, trip, and fall accidents.

Two major demographic trends in the United States are the increasing number of adults over 65 and the growing prevalence of obesity.  Madigan’s current project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health aims to better understand how these two factors contribute to falls, and will provide valuable information to update fall prevention guidelines and strategies in light of these demographic trends.

Madigan is the director of the Kevin P. Granata Biomechanics Lab at Virginia Tech.
