Mark Reiter

Scholar of the Week Mark ReiterThe Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation recognizes Mark Reiter, an associate professor of soils and nutrient management in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, for helping farmers in Virginia to produce food in environmentally friendly ways.

Reiter, who works from the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center, helps farmers improve their fertilizer sources and fertilizer application techniques to increase productivity, efficiency, and profitability — all while protecting the environment.

The major focus of his research is to assist producers by developing innovative soil management and soil fertility strategies that utilize new technologies, new methods for fertilizer applications, and testing of new fertilizer sources that will increase overall productivity and reduce nutrient losses to the environment, especially nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur.

By comparing new and alternative fertilizer sources as well as new techniques for fertilizer application, Reiter and colleagues seek to evolve and refine Extension recommendations and improve major vegetable and agronomic commodities in Virginia, including barley, cotton, field corn, soybeans, wheat, potatoes, sweet corn, snap beans, and tomatoes. His goal is to improve the efficiency, productivity, quality, and overall sustainability of Virginia’s grain, fiber, and vegetable farming sectors.

Reiter received his master’s degree in agronomy and soils from Auburn University, and his bachelor’s degree in crop and soil environmental sciences at Virginia Tech.
