Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment

The Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment (ISCE) enhances Virginia Tech’s capacity and status in the social sciences by catalyzing innovative, interdisciplinary, and translational research and scholarship addressing critical individual and social concerns impacting the lives of people and places. The institute strategically invests in targeted research within the social sciences, providing financial support and technical assistance for individual faculty members and interdisciplinary teams whose work has the potential for extramural funding.
The Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment supports projects in four thematic areas:
- Global issues and policy
- Health and human development
- Risk and resilience and community
- Built environment
In addition to financial support, the institute facilitates interdisciplinary research and collaborations through mentoring and workshops, proposal development assistance, an e-newsletter, web-based resources and speakers and events. Offices are in a historic house, which has a conference space and short-term shared office space available for faculty or visitor use.
