Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science

The Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS) is one of six research institutes at Virginia Tech. The institute forges partnerships across disciplinary boundaries to enhance the university’s ability to embrace ambitious research opportunities in the service of society, and catalyze discovery at the intersections of engineering, the humanities, and the physical, life, and social sciences.
The institute provides talented faculty the resources to expand their research programs through seed investments in collaborative projects; high-quality shared facilities for transdisciplinary research; the purchase, installation, and maintenance of specialized equipment; administrative support for proposal development; and graduate and undergraduate student support. These investments build on Virginia Tech’s existing research strengths and help the university explore new areas of expertise in a changing academic landscape.
The Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science is also helping build international research partnerships and creating experiential learning opportunities for students at all levels, advancing Virginia Tech's mission to reimagine the global land-grant university in the twenty-first century .
