Environment, Health and Safety Onboarding at Virginia Tech

A shared partnership exists among University leadership, faculty, researchers, laboratory staff, students, and Environmental Health and Safety to support a strong culture of safety; a culture in which all individuals responsibly embrace safety as a core value for long-term health and safety. As a principal investigator, supervisor or researcher you are responsible for the safety of yourself and your colleagues.

This webinar will review the Environmental Health and Safety onboarding recommendations for the responsible for the oversight of laboratory safety and responsible for administration and implementation of the university’s research and training requirements, safety programs, policies, and procedures.

Safety and Compliance Officer,
Environmental Health and Safety

Roberta Polak is a Safety and Compliance officer at Virginia Tech Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and the EHS liaison for the Fralin Life Sciences Institute flagship buildings.

Prior to entering the EHS field, Roberta conducted doctoral and postdoctoral research in biomaterials which resulted in 11 peer-reviewed publications. With perspectives from both the bench and safety sides of academic research, her goal is to ensure that researchers can follow their scientific pursuits, safely.

About the Series

The Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance’s Investigator Series provides researchers with a peer-to-peer forum to share ethical considerations that they make during the design, conduct and dissemination of their research. This style of learning opens the door to new perspectives and meaningful conversations in the pursuit of research excellence.
