Vince Baranauskas

Responsibilities

Vince Baranauskas serves as senior research development coordinator for Research and Innovation. In this role, Vince works to position faculty, staff, and students across all of Virginia Tech’s research institutes, university-level centers, colleges, affiliated corporations, and initiatives for increased funding success and growth. Baranauskas is working to bring together diverse, transdisciplinary teams that are strategically positioned to respond to current and future solicitations and have insight and perspective from federal agencies prior to solicitation release. Baranauskas actively engages and assists with sponsor outreach, solicitation advertising, as well as proposal writing and submission that is supported with insight from institute directors, associate deans for research, and a diverse group of faculty from Virginia Tech’s various campuses.  

Background

While at NanoSonic, Baranauskas created innovative material intellectual property that has generated over $20 million in funding revenue. In his role, he established diverse, innovative, and interdisciplinary teams that focused on obtaining and sustaining highly competitive R&D programs that largely focused on the creation, analysis, optimization, scale-up, and commercial transition of novel multifunctional materials for numerous unique military and civilian applications.  

In previously held roles, Baranauskas focused on federal R&D grant writing and strategic collaborative teaming that resulted in funding from various funding agencies including DARPA, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, Army, Navy, Air Force, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Special Operations Command,  the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Missile Defense Agency.  Through his work, Baranauskas won and was the primary investigator on over 77 combined Phase I, II, and III Small Business Innovative Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. He also designed, created, and transitioned multiple material technologies from concept to commercial markets and won an R&D 100 Award.

Education

Baranauskas earned a bachelors in biology with a minor in chemistry and a Ph.D. in macromolecular science and engineering; both from Virginia Tech.
