Career Thoughts and Career Development: Let’s Talk About It

Ericka Boone, Ph.D., is the Director of the NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER), Division of Biomedical Research Workforce (DBRW). Dr. Boone joined NIH in 2008 as a Health Scientist Administrator in the Office of Science Policy and Communications at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). She then served as Director of the NIH Division of Loan Repayment and, most recently, as Acting Director of DBRW.  

In this talk, being broadcast from Arlington, VA, in conjunction with a visit of Presidential Postdoctoral Fellows and Research and Innovation Postdoctoral Scholars, Dr. Boone will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding how imposter thoughts can impact career development and growth opportunities
  • Discussing personal coping strategies that can be utilized to recognize and negate imposter thoughts
  • Discussing how institutional culture can perpetuate feelings of profession impostorism and how institutional leadership can take greater responsibility in growing and sustaining more supportive environments 

This session is open to all postdoctoral associates, early career researchers, graduate students, faculty, and administrators at Virginia Tech.
