Institute and State University is a major research and doctoral
granting university. Virginia Tech ranks 50th among all colleges and universities
in research expenditures and 13th among institutions without a human medical
facility (NSF 1999). Total research expenditures in 2000 were $192.7 million.
Virginia Tech is 29th in the nation in the number of full-time graduate
students, according to the NSF-NIH Graduate Student Survey, and 36th in
the nation in the number of doctoral degrees awarded as of 1998, according
to the Chronicle of Higher Education. In addition to the Colleges
of Agriculture and Life Sciences,
Architecture
and Urban Studies, Arts and Sciences,
Business,
Engineering,
Natural
Resources, Human Resources and Education,
and Veterinary Medicine, there
are more than 100 research
