Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a major research and doctoral granting university. Virginia Tech ranks 48th among all colleges and universities in research expenditures (NSF) and in the top 15 among institutions without a human medical facility. The university is 30th in the nation in numbers of doctoral degrees granted. In addition to the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Architecture and Urban Studies, Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, Natural Resources, Human Resources and Education, and Veterinary Medicine, there are more than 100 research centers. Research that crosses disciplines is a tradition and strength at Virginia Tech.
