| Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a major research and doctoral granting university. Virginia Tech ranks 48th among all colleges and universities in research expenditures (NSF) and in the top 15 among institutions without a human medical facility. The university is 30th in the nation in numbers of doctoral degrees granted.
