Proposal Development Team

The Proposal Development Team (PDT) is funded by the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (ICTAS), and the Institute for Biomedical and Health Sciences (IBPHS) as a service to aid the growth of large research programs at Virginia Tech.

Team experience includes management and execution of research and development, science and technology programs; university business administration, as well as private-sector proposal development.

The PDT Mission

Goal: Growing Virginia Tech’s stature as a research institution by: Building upon the well-established base of scientific research at Virginia Tech, and facilitating the initiation and growth of large interdisciplinary research programs.

Charter: Assist interdisciplinary teams in the development and review of responsive proposals, and, if required, help with the initial management of the resulting research programs. Contribute to formulating grand challenge research proposals and to setting the future vision for Virginia Tech research.

Functions: Functions follow need and include the following:

1. Seek out and assist in the capture of challenging big research opportunities
2. Work with the colleges to assemble the right research teams
3. Review and comment on on announcements
4. Assist with proposal preparation planning and with the establishment of a timeline to submission
5. Assist with required resources; e.g., graphics production and refinement
6. Coordinate review teams at the appropriate time in the proposal building process.
7. Assist with management planning and budget development.
8. Work with PIs to establish work breakdown structure (WBS) and statements of work (SOW).
9. Serve as a liaison with OSP budget preparation and proposal submission planning.
10. Provide editorial and responsiveness reviews (departments and colleges ensure scientific review).
